Are there any free one handed typing programs for kids in elementary school just learning to type?
Any inexpensive commercial programs for cash strapped budgets?

Hi Nancy,

I didn't find any free one-handed typing programs, but there are a couple not-too-expensive ones. Five Finger Typist was recommended on a couple sites and is available from Mayer Johnson for $85.00. You can also check out the following web site:  http://www.aboutonehandtyping.com  It has a free trial you can download and the CD program costs $49.00.  Both of these use a standard keyboard. The above website is essentially an ad for the Lilly Walters one hand typing program, but it also gives good information on the available options.

There are also Dvorak (alternate key layout) typing programs specifically for left or right handed typists. While I'm guessing this would ultimately be the most efficient method for a one handed typist, there is something to be said for learning on a keyboard you could access anywhere. Sometimes children and their families prefer learning on a standard keyboard.

You might also consider a smaller keyboard for a younger child. This is also addressed on the above website.
